Hard reality check… Running a contracting business isn’t cheap. And the more you care about the quality of your work and the future of your company, the more expensive it becomes.

Reinvesting into employees and training materials, vans, tools, fuel, insurance, software, payroll. It all adds up quickly. And that’s only a portion of what happens behind the scenes that most people never see.

A lot goes into running a professional operation and consistently delivering high-quality work. The finished product is just a small glimpse of everything it takes to make it happen.

Quick update on Hank’s dog shower. I’ll have Nick back on site this week, and he should be close to wrapping up all of the wall tile, aside from the sink area.

This bathroom is really starting to come together, and the team is doing a great job. As a reminder, this one was intentionally designed to be a bit more challenging—featuring larger format tile, multiple materials, a chevron pattern, miters, and a lot of detailed work throughout.

As we are wrapping up this project, I wanted to post some cool details that went into the master bathroom and job in general. If you didn’t listen to the video, we used @laticrete NXT Level plus for floor leveler to bring our height up as well as a level substrate. The customer also elected on using @laticrete sound deadening Mat in order to achieve a more peaceful bathroom experience. We also used 254 mortar to install this mat and stone material. Also, just to clarify, it has an IIC rating of 50 and a Delta IIC RATING OF 22. ...

Mosaic or envelope cut shower pan… what actually looks and functions better?

In my opinion, a classic mosaic pan never goes out of style. It adds contrast, defines the wet area, and gives you that extra grip underfoot.

On the flip side, an envelope cut with large format tile creates a much more seamless, high-end look. Fewer grout joints also means it’s easier to clean and maintain over time.

From a mechanical standpoint though, envelope cuts really look great especially in a curbless shower. When done right, they look sharp and perform just as well.

A lot of people wonder why large format tile costs more to install—this is exactly why.

There’s virtually zero margin for error. If a slab breaks, you’re not losing a couple square feet… you could be out 40–50 sqft in one shot.

Compared to something like a 12x24 or subway tile, every step has to be dialed in. Your layout, your measurements, your cuts—everything needs to be exact. Relief cuts have to be made when needed, and corners should be drilled to reduce stress and prevent cracking.

Another great example of why having solid systems in your business is so important. While I’m on site managing the project and meeting with contractors, our estimator can stay focused on what they do best estimating.

In this case, the client had a few changes, so I jumped into JobTread and sent a quick to-do over to the office. Simple, efficient, and everything keeps moving without missing a beat.#tiledesign #contractor #tile #bathroomremodel #bathroomrenovation

Been playing around with this Raimondi tile saw setup lately. All of our guys are trained to cut miters by hand—and that’s something we take pride in—but having a guide like this really helps with consistency, especially on bigger runs.

Right now I’ve got a Festool vacuum hooked up to it. It does a solid job, but as you can see, it’s still not quite keeping up with everything.

Curious what everyone else is running—any recommendations on a vacuum setup that really handles this kind of work well?#tiledesign #contractor #tile #bathroomremodel #bathroomrenovation

This is exactly why solid systems are non-negotiable in a growing business. As we’ve grown, it’s become clear, everyone needs to stay in their lane. Managers manage, estimators estimate, and installers install. When each role is dialed in and working together, that’s when things really start to run smooth. I also would like to give a shout out to Job Tread for giving us a great program to be able to achieve this. #tiledesign #contractor #tile #bathroomremodel #bathroomrenovation ...

Throwback to this large-format porcelain floor we installed. I did everything I could to keep the heated floor probes out of the way… still managed to bury them under tile—good thing those leads are long.

Now here’s the real question: are you cutting that floor vent before install, or risking it after?
